Migation To The Wetlands

February is usually when I start planning where and what I want to shoot during the year. I pick February because that’s when a lot of migratory birds come south from Canada to mate. Like a lot of Utah photographers, I spend my weekends at the wetlands hoping to get a good shot.

Most of what I see are ducks and geese, great blue herons, and red-winged blackbirds. Bald eagles are out there pretty often too, along the Weber River, below Echo Reservoir, Willard Bay. There are other hunting birds around too, like red tail hawks ,northern harriers, kestrels, and the occasional owl. Around Farmington Bay. Snowy egrets, tundra swans, and pelicans show up in a few spots too, flying in formations that are hard not to watch.

It’s not always about the perfect photo. Sometimes it’s just being there, watching, seeing the patterns, and waiting for the next moment. That’s what keeps me coming back, weekend after weekend.
